Practice

We are a Structural Award winning practice of imaginative engineers collaborating with some of the country’s most ambitious architects and clients, emerging and established, to deliver the highest quality spaces.

Sustainable design is at the core of our ethos and business practices. We aim to be recognised as a market leader in delivering innovative building and infrastructures projects while significantly reducing the environmental impact of our work.

As creative problem solvers, we help clients realise their designs by truly understanding the narrative and intent behind each project. Our experience as structural and civil engineers allow us to work at all scales and across all typologies, acting as a reliable partner throughout the design and build process.

We are committed to providing industry leading engineering consultancy services that are efficient and sustainable. We will actively suggest ways to reduce impact on the environment, and undertake carbon counting exercises to justify our approach.

Climate Response

The construction industry globally accounts for around 40% of energy-related CO2 emissions. We are conscientious people and take our responsibilities as structural and civil engineers seriously.

We are signatories of UK Structural Engineers Declare and commit to positive actions in the fight against climate change. We support RIBA and LETI 2030 goals, reducing carbon emissions across all projects using sustainable materials and modern methods of construction.

As part of our work, we carry out carbon counting on historic and current projects. Our ever-growing dataset allows us to monitor, identify and compare the most sustainable design solutions. In our design, we apply Circular Economy principles of recycling wherever possible, actively seeking to reuse or repurpose construction materials.

We are active members of the IStructE climate task force group and are contributing to new standards and regulations on embodied carbon. Our team has significant experience and genuine interest in delivering low carbon designs. Aware of the ever developing technology and innovation within the field, we engage in weekly CPD sessions, internally and externally, to share our knowledge and expertise with our peers. This, in addition to training courses, ensures our team is always delivering the best results.

By using our expertise alongside embodied carbon calculations we are able to inform our clients and collaborators wherever a more sustainable alternative to their design is available. Whether that’s retaining and maximising the potential of an existing building or amending layouts to avoid a carbon intensive transfer structure, we pride ourselves on our thorough appraisal of solutions.

At SD I find myself immersed in the decision-making process on a wide variety of projects while being rewarded with the flexibility needed as a busy parent of two little kids.

Culture

Everything we do is underpinned with a rigorous process and work ethic. A successful project is one which maintains the utmost level of attention to detail, responsiveness and execution.

We like to be challenged by interesting, innovative designs by our clients. We respond with well-reasoned solutions to bring out the best in design and build.

Our team is our greatest asset and we aim for our workplace to be a diverse, healthy, motivated, inclusive, and enjoyable environment. We are Heart of the City members and signatories of the Diverse Leaders Pledge.

The teams’ happiness is paramount, with a strong understanding at SD that nothing is more important than personal well-being. Regularly checking in with one another and undertaking anonymous stress surveys are two of the ways we support our team’s welfare.

We consider inspiring and supporting the next generation of engineers as part of our job, and we regularly take part in career fairs, STEM programmes, and mentoring opportunities.

We are working towards becoming a Zero Net Carbon Company and we are committed to improving our sustainability credentials. We assess our carbon footprint on a regular basis, implementing measures to lower our impact on the environment wherever possible.

People

Each member of our team is an important cog in what makes us SD. We all play proactive parts in our projects, and love to put our heads together to solve problems on complex projects.

Work aside, we are a group of kind people that, together, create an environment that is comfortable, yet hard-working, process driven, yet creative, independent, yet democratic.
