Elijah Sserunjogi

Civil Technician

Growing up in Uganda played a huge role in developing Elijah’s passion for engineering. He moved to the UK when he was 15 and the difference between project budgets, programmes and the various materials used here compared to what he’d experienced in Uganda sparked his engineering curiosity further.

He started his apprenticeship journey with another practice before the pandemic took hold. This brief experience provided Elijah with a valuable lesson – he discovered how important it is to choose a workplace with similar core values to enable him to get the most out of his apprenticeship. Since joining SD in 2021, Elijah has been heavily involved in delivering drainage design and layouts, levels design, hard landscaping and build ups, and the road design on a number of projects.

Elijah is a socially conscious individual and has heavily invested time into his local community and overseas charities. He volunteers at his local youth club delivering non contact boxing fitness sessions, and offers guidance on career pathways, interview skills, and general interpersonal relationship development training to post 16s. He works part-time for Newham Council, reviewing decisions regarding provisions for young people within the borough, as well as being a Youth Director for the Love Life Generation charity.

I felt very welcomed and valued by the team at SD, even before I started my employment. I was given plenty of support during the application stage which was appreciated. The practice promotes a healthy work-life balance which includes many social activities with the whole team, and you don’t get to the end of a working week feeling burnt out.
