Affordable Housing in Central Bedfordshire

We’re celebrating this Central Bedfordshire affordable housing development achieving approval of reserved matters.

The site provided many challenges in relation to the civil engineering. All the drainage elements were modelled hydraulically to assess the surface water drainage for extreme storm events, taking into account climate change allowances. The site levels were modelled in 3D which ensured coordination with the drainage to inform low points, assess where the overland flows would fall, and to ensure no flooding was caused to neighbouring developments.

Our civils team worked closely with the local authority through rounds of comments and meetings to ensure the site had a positive impact on the local area and reduced flooding where possible. The surface water flows from site were restricted with the use of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and flow control devices.

Appointing a good civil engineer can help achieve planning, reduce embodied carbon, avoid unnecessary costs, and reduce the project programme. It’s best to get civil engineers involved in the earliest stages of a project as this is often when they can add the most value to schemes.
